Downward transcendence, most frequently through intoxicants, can work, but I think it makes a person sloppy and, often, dull. Upward transcendence is too fucking lofty for any kind of functioning life, from what I can tell-you can’t do much else when you’re blissed out on prayer or meditation. In the language Aldous Huxley used (in The Devils of Loudun, I think it was), lateral self-transcendence. ![]() In whatever way possible, if only for the briefest moments, you have to bypass the overtly conscious part of the brain. An essential aspect of making art, from what I can tell, is allowing things from the depths of your mind to come up to the surface and spill into whatever medium it is that you’re working in.
